Pediatric Chiropractic at Stillpoint Family Chiropractic

Dr. Pennella encourages parents to bring in children of all ages for a checkup. The very first misalignment usually occurs at birth, but many more occur throughout childhood, and most often they occur below our radar. Therefore it is vital that children begin their life with proper alignment, and receive regular check-ups.

It is because of this probability that some chiropractors may choose to seek additional training in family wellness post graduation. With 180 hours of study through the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) Dr. Pennella earned her CACCP (Certification from the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics) in 2016. This designation is an advanced step in working with infertility, prenatal care, postnatal care, and pediatrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Expect From Pediatric Chiropractic Care at SFC?
On the first visit to our office, all children will undergo an exam to determine their level of care.

Infants up to 1 year old will be evaluated using observation, hands-on palpation and infant neurological reflex tests. Toddlers through preteens are evaluated through observation, hands-on palpation and a thermal scan of their nervous system.

Depending on the health history of a teenager, their exams will much resemble that of an adult in our office, including x-rays if needed, a complete (5 part) nervous system scan, a posture scan, and hands-on palpation.

Is Pediatric Chiropractic Care Safe?

According to the American Chiropractic Association, the safety of pediatric chiropractic is supported in scientific literature. A 2008 study of 781 pediatric patients under 3 years of age (73% of whom were under 13 weeks) who received a total of 5,242 chiropractic treatments at a teaching clinic over a three-year period found no serious adverse events.
How Is Chiropractic For a Baby Different From Adults?
The amount of pressure needed to adjust the spine of an infant is comparable to the light touch of your finger resting on your eyelid. Since the spine of a baby is made of cartilage at birth instead of bone, the amount of force needed to perform an adjustment is considerably less, and equally safe.

We understand that sometimes babies just get fussy – If this occurs during an adjustment, we recommend that the mother lay on her back on the adjusting table, and rest her child on her chest. This relaxes the child and allows Dr. Pennella to work. We also have a play area for the older siblings to make sure that everyone is comfortable.

When Should a Baby Have a Chiropractic Checkup?

Due to the stress of giving birth (on mother and child) we recommend a checkup within the same week of delivery.
